Prison Gangs

Life behind bars depends solely on gang affiliations. Unlike civilian population, the prison population is mostly gang related. You got to earn your respect. Television doesn't depict what really happens when you locked up.

You got to be ready to fight, stab, and kill other people in order to get that protection. If you locked up around 2-5,000 other inmates, you have no choice but to get in where you fit in. Without gang protection, you will be subjected to violence from every gang in there. The color of your skin is like your uniform as inmates put it. Everybody else of a different ethnic group will target you and there is nothing you can do about it but fight and hope to survive.

It takes years to build your reputation up to a level where inmates will calm down and let you be. It doesn't come over night you know. The "G code" is the most important rule. If you're not "man enough" to live by its standards then you're at the bottom of the food chain. Those who don't live by this code are subjected to being beat, stabbed, "turned out", and even killed.
